Gerrit Does is widely recognized as one of the most important pioneers in the history of BMX. An active motocross rider in the Netherlands, Does first encountered BMX in the United States in 1974 and immediately recognized its potential. What began as a training tool for motocross quickly revealed itself as an entirely new sport. Determined to introduce BMX to Europe, he organized some of the continent’s earliest BMX activities, founded the Eerste Nationale Fiets Moto-cross Organisatie in 1977, and established the Stichting Fietscross Nederland in 1978. In 1979, he helped organize what is believed to be one of the first official BMX races in Europe in Veldhoven, Netherlands, while simultaneously bringing Dutch riders to compete in the United States at a time when BMX was still largely an American phenomenon.
As BMX expanded across Europe, Does became one of the sport’s most influential organizers and visionaries. He successfully integrated BMX into the Royal Dutch Cycling Federation and, in April 1981, joined George Esser and Tadashi Inoue in founding the International BMX Federation (IBMXF) in Florida, serving as its Secretary General. Through his leadership, BMX gained the structure necessary for international competition and continued global growth. His influence extended far beyond the Netherlands. He helped introduce BMX to Germany through television exposure, advised early BMX entrepreneurs and manufacturers, encouraged the construction of some of the country’s first tracks, and helped connect European riders with opportunities to compete on the world stage. In 1983, he organized the first BMX World Championship held outside the United States at Ponypark Slagharen, a landmark event that demonstrated BMX had become a truly international sport.
Beyond his contributions as a promoter and administrator, Does dedicated decades to preserving and advancing cycling culture. He managed and advised prominent BMX teams, contributed to the development of mountain biking in the Netherlands, helped conceptualize the UCI BMX World Cup series, and authored books on motocross and BMX. Through his University of BMX project, he created one of the most comprehensive archives of BMX history in the world, preserving race results, photographs, publications, and stories that might otherwise have been lost. Today, Gerrit Does is recognized as one of the key figures responsible for BMX’s growth beyond its American roots. His efforts helped establish the foundations of European BMX racing, international competition, and historical preservation, leaving a legacy that continues to influence the sport worldwide.
