This document defines the official artifact numbering standard used throughout the Lititz BMX Archive & Inventory.

The numbering system provides every physical artifact with a permanent, unique identifier that remains consistent across the website, inventory records, videos, photographs, QR codes, educational resources, and future publications.

Number Format

Each artifact is assigned an identifier using the following format:

YY.NNNN

Where:

• YY = Archive series established by year.
• NNNN = Sequential four-digit artifact number beginning with 0001.

Examples:

• 26.0001
• 26.0002
• 26.0003

The current archive series (26) represents the standardized Lititz BMX Archive catalog established during 2026.

Assignment Standard

Each physical artifact receives one permanent identifier.

Artifact numbers are assigned sequentially as items are formally cataloged.

Once assigned, an artifact number is never changed or reassigned.

Numbers remain with the artifact regardless of:

• Ownership
• Display location
• Website organization
• Storage location
• Future collection growth

Numbering Philosophy

Artifact numbers are intentionally non-descriptive. The identifier itself does not encode the artifact’s manufacturer, rider, category, date, or historical significance. This ensures that as research evolves, historical interpretations change, or new information is discovered, artifact identifiers remain permanent and published references remain valid.

Leading Zeros

Sequential numbers always contain four digits.

Examples:

• 26.0001
• 26.0017
• 26.0148
• 26.0213

Leading zeros are retained for consistency, sorting, and long-term scalability.

Retired Numbers

If an artifact permanently leaves the collection, its identifier is retired.

Retired numbers are never reassigned to another artifact.

This preserves historical continuity and maintains permanent references within published materials.

Digital References

Artifact identifiers serve as the primary reference throughout the Lititz BMX Archive ecosystem, including:

• Archive & Inventory pages
• YouTube videos and descriptions
• Educational resources
• QR Codes
• Campaign pages
• Research documents
• Social media references
• Internal inventory records

Future Expansion

The numbering standard is designed to support long-term archive growth.

Additional archive series may be established in future years while maintaining compatibility with existing artifact references.
