Description snapshot
In this special audio podcast episode, Kyle steps completely out of his comfort zone and into an archery range for a first-ever lesson with Jessica Reveal—an accomplished archer, hunter, and the niece of BMX legend Harry Leary. What begins as a simple archery lesson quickly turns into an honest, thoughtful, and sometimes funny conversation about family, mentorship, safety, learning through failure, and what it was really like growing up with one of the most influential (and infamous) figures in BMX history. 🏹 Episode Concept Kyle mentioned wanting to learn archery during a conversation with Linda, who connected him with her daughter Jessica. The two meet at an archery range where Jessica teaches Kyle the fundamentals—stance, safety, nocking, drawing, aiming, and release—while sharing stories about her uncle Harry Leary along the way. 🔥 Topics & Questions Discussed First-time archery basics and range safety Archery equipment breakdown for beginners Learning new skills with past injuries Teaching styles and mentorship Growing up with BMX legend Harry Leary Favorite family stories and “we’re in trouble” moments Lessons learned from Harry—both what to do and what not to do Harry Leary as an uncle vs. Harry Leary the BMX icon The elbow incident and its impact on family Commitment to BMX and its personal cost Finding closure, legacy, and moving forward One-word reflections and shared secrets The mental side of archery and focus 🎯 Why This Episode Matters This episode isn’t just about archery or BMX—it’s about learning, family bonds, legacy, and how unconventional mentors shape who we become. I've been curious about it and she offered to been curious about it and she offered to hook us up and I jumped at the chance. hook us up and I jumped at the chance. So, once again, thank you very much for So, once again, thank you very much for taking the time to meet with me. taking the time to meet with me. >> Oh, yeah. No problem. If I have an >> Oh, yeah. No problem. If I have an opportunity to teach someone archery, I opportunity to teach someone archery, I jump on it because archery, it's not jump on it because archery, it's not just a hobby to me. It's a passion. It's just a hobby to me. It's a passion. It's a lifestyle. It's really everything to a lifestyle. It's really everything to me. It defines who I am. So, I'm willing me. It defines who I am. So, I'm willing to share that with anybody who wants to to share that with anybody who wants to learn. learn. >> I love that. And I get to learn from the >> I love that. And I get to learn from the best. So, that's that's awesome. But, I best. So, that's that's awesome. But, I guess before we get started, safety, is guess before we get started, safety, is there anything you can kind of share there anything you can kind of share with me? I mean, I don't know. Where do with me? I mean, I don't know. Where do we get started? I just always think we get started? I just always think safety. safety. >> Not many people think it's a, you know, >> Not many people think it's a, you know, as dangerous as firearms, but it very as dangerous as firearms, but it very much well could be. You can't just grab much well could be. You can't just grab a bow and decide, "Hey, I'm going to a bow and decide, "Hey, I'm going to shoot it and see what happens." You're shoot it and see what happens." You're holding a a bow that has poundage behind holding a a bow that has poundage behind the limbs. My bows, there's 60 lb limbs the limbs. My bows, there's 60 lb limbs on them. If something happens with that on them. If something happens with that bow, that thing explodes, you can hit bow, that thing explodes, you can hit your face, you can cut your finger open, your face, you can cut your finger open, you can severely hurt yourself. So, you can severely hurt yourself. So, there is a lot of safety that does come there is a lot of safety that does come with archery. One, you got to make sure with archery. One, you got to make sure that you're able to pull the bow back that you're able to pull the bow back without a struggle. Because if you can't without a struggle. Because if you can't pull that bow back, you risk not only pull that bow back, you risk not only blowing up the bow and again hurting blowing up the bow and again hurting yourself, breaking the bow, but you risk yourself, breaking the bow, but you risk hurting muscles, straining muscles, and hurting muscles, straining muscles, and all of that. So, there's that aspect of all of that. So, there's that aspect of it as far as shooting a bow. And then it as far as shooting a bow. And then Makes sense. Yeah, I work on bows for a Makes sense. Yeah, I work on bows for a living and I had a bow blow up on me and living and I had a bow blow up on me and it actually took the skin off of my it actually took the skin off of my finger to where I could see my bone on finger to where I could see my bone on my finger my finger >> and it it's they can get pretty >> and it it's they can get pretty dangerous. dangerous. >> Yeah, I can imagine. So, can I like I'm >> Yeah, I can imagine. So, can I like I'm trying to visualize this. I'm a sailor. trying to visualize this. I'm a sailor. When you're tying a ship down, we're When you're tying a ship down, we're there's a thing that we are always there's a thing that we are always terrified about where a line snaps and terrified about where a line snaps and it'll it's they always show you you see it'll it's they always show you you see a video twice a year of snapback. I a video twice a year of snapback. I guess snapback I guess that's what it is guess snapback I guess that's what it is where a sailor lost his legs or a couple where a sailor lost his legs or a couple of sailors lost their legs because of of sailors lost their legs because of the tension on that line. Is that the tension on that line. Is that essentially the same thing? essentially the same thing? >> Yeah. So imagine, so you have most men >> Yeah. So imagine, so you have most men shoot around a 70 80 lb bow. So you have shoot around a 70 80 lb bow. So you have this bow that has 80 lb worth of force this bow that has 80 lb worth of force on the limbs and the only thing holding on the limbs and the only thing holding those limbs down is that string that's those limbs down is that string that's tied up around the cams. tied up around the cams. >> And so if you pull it back and you don't >> And so if you pull it back and you don't pull it back correctly, you chance that pull it back correctly, you chance that string sliding off the cams and then string sliding off the cams and then exploding. And it could if it hits your exploding. And it could if it hits your arm, it's called string slap. And it arm, it's called string slap. And it could Oh, it hurts like a [ __ ] It It's could Oh, it hurts like a [ __ ] It It's It's not fun. Things on the bow can It's not fun. Things on the bow can start flying and then all of that pound, start flying and then all of that pound, it's like it's like >> the poundage if it hits you, it can >> the poundage if it hits you, it can slice your face open. I mean, slice your face open. I mean, >> it's essentially just like the sailors. >> it's essentially just like the sailors. If something happens, they can lose a If something happens, they can lose a leg. leg. >> I mean, you're not going to lose a limb >> I mean, you're not going to lose a limb from the string, but it's it can cause from the string, but it's it can cause some severe damage. Just like if you some severe damage. Just like if you pull a bow back without an arrow. This pull a bow back without an arrow. This is probably a very big rule, by the way. is probably a very big rule, by the way. >> Huh. >> Huh. >> Don't ever pull a bow back without an >> Don't ever pull a bow back without an arrow knocked. arrow knocked. >> I did not know. >> I did not know. >> Yeah. Cuz if you pull a bow back and >> Yeah. Cuz if you pull a bow back and there's no arrow there's no arrow >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> where is all that poundage going on your >> where is all that poundage going on your finger? finger? >> It's going to go Well, it's going to go >> It's going to go Well, it's going to go straight back into the bow. straight back into the bow. >> Oh. >> Oh. >> Cuz that string's not pushing anything >> Cuz that string's not pushing anything forward. It has nowhere to put all that forward. It has nowhere to put all that pressure into to launch the arrow. pressure into to launch the arrow. >> So, if you don't have an arrow, >> So, if you don't have an arrow, >> you risk dry firing a bow, and that's >> you risk dry firing a bow, and that's what it's called. So, if you pull back a what it's called. So, if you pull back a bow and there's no arrow and you shoot bow and there's no arrow and you shoot it it >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> all that poundage is going back into the >> all that poundage is going back into the limbs, and that's what'll blow up a bow limbs, and that's what'll blow up a bow usually usually 98% of the time. 98% of the time. >> I had no idea, but it makes total sense. >> I had no idea, but it makes total sense. Wow. Wow. >> Yeah. So, you're kind of holding a >> Yeah. So, you're kind of holding a ticking time bomb if you don't know what ticking time bomb if you don't know what you're doing with a bow. you're doing with a bow. >> That's what it sounds like. Uh, but >> That's what it sounds like. Uh, but there there is protective gear, right? I there there is protective gear, right? I see an arm guard here and a glove. And see an arm guard here and a glove. And >> I don't know. It's some kind of sling >> I don't know. It's some kind of sling thing. I'm not sure. thing. I'm not sure. >> What is the arm guard? And the What is >> What is the arm guard? And the What is this equipment for? this equipment for? >> The arm guard is a lot of that stuff is >> The arm guard is a lot of that stuff is for re curve bows. So, there's different for re curve bows. So, there's different type of bows type of bows >> in the archery world. Do you have >> in the archery world. Do you have compound bows, recurve bows, long bows, compound bows, recurve bows, long bows, crossbows? So the the arm guards and the crossbows? So the the arm guards and the finger guards, stuff like that, that's finger guards, stuff like that, that's going to be recurve type equipment. I going to be recurve type equipment. I mean, you can use an arm guard for mean, you can use an arm guard for compound bows. It's not like you can't, compound bows. It's not like you can't, >> but a lot of people will use that for >> but a lot of people will use that for recurve cuz you have more of a chance recurve cuz you have more of a chance >> slapping your arm with the string. And >> slapping your arm with the string. And that's what the arm guard's for is to that's what the arm guard's for is to protect your arm protect your arm >> from getting a string slap, which >> from getting a string slap, which that can leave a leave a mark. That that can leave a leave a mark. That doesn't feel good. doesn't feel good. >> Yeah, I've got a lot to learn. But >> Yeah, I've got a lot to learn. But arrows, that's cool. And it's kind of arrows, that's cool. And it's kind of obvious on this one, right? obvious on this one, right? >> You know, with arrows that a lot of >> You know, with arrows that a lot of people are just like, "Hey, I'm going to people are just like, "Hey, I'm going to go get an arrow and shoot it out of a go get an arrow and shoot it out of a bow." But there's so much that goes into bow." But there's so much that goes into the arrows that you choose to shoot. the arrows that you choose to shoot. Can you Can you >> uh so >> uh so >> share what in a nutshell what that is? >> share what in a nutshell what that is? >> Yeah. So you have obviously the length >> Yeah. So you have obviously the length of an arrow. of an arrow. >> Uhhuh. >> Uhhuh. >> You have to cut the length of the arrow >> You have to cut the length of the arrow correctly to your draw length of the correctly to your draw length of the bow. You don't want it too short because bow. You don't want it too short because then you risk having it behind the rest then you risk having it behind the rest of your bow and then you can shoot of your bow and then you can shoot yourself or break a bow or completely yourself or break a bow or completely shatter the arrow and then all of the shatter the arrow and then all of the carbon fiber goes into your hand or your carbon fiber goes into your hand or your face. face. >> Uh oh. Yeah. >> Uh oh. Yeah. >> Yeah. And if it's too long, you risk >> Yeah. And if it's too long, you risk losing speed. And in a hunting scenario, losing speed. And in a hunting scenario, that's very important is your speed of that's very important is your speed of an arrow. So length of an arrow is a big an arrow. So length of an arrow is a big one. You do want to get the correct one. You do want to get the correct spine of an arrow. So spine of an arrow. So >> spine, >> spine, >> what that means is the spine of the >> what that means is the spine of the arrow is the flexibility of an arrow. arrow is the flexibility of an arrow. >> Okay? >> Okay? >> So depending on what poundage you shoot, >> So depending on what poundage you shoot, that is going to tell your spine. So I that is going to tell your spine. So I shoot 60 lb. And based off the poundage shoot 60 lb. And based off the poundage I shoot and my draw length, there's kind I shoot and my draw length, there's kind of an equation that you would do to give of an equation that you would do to give you your your spine of the arrow. And so you your your spine of the arrow. And so I shoot a 400 spine. So it's going to be I shoot a 400 spine. So it's going to be a little bit more flexible than say a a little bit more flexible than say a 350 or 300 spined arrow. 350 or 300 spined arrow. >> Um just because I'm shooting less >> Um just because I'm shooting less poundage. poundage. >> Put in your brain, you're shooting an >> Put in your brain, you're shooting an arrow at less poundage, you're going to arrow at less poundage, you're going to want it to flex a little bit more to get want it to flex a little bit more to get a little better flight. But if you're a little better flight. But if you're shooting 80 pounds, you don't want that shooting 80 pounds, you don't want that arrow to flex too much because the 80 arrow to flex too much because the 80 pounds is gonna mess up the the arrow pounds is gonna mess up the the arrow flight. So you want it to be stiffer. flight. So you want it to be stiffer. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yep. >> Yep. >> So that's what the spine is about. And >> So that's what the spine is about. And that helps with the arrow flight, which that helps with the arrow flight, which is obviously important when it comes to is obviously important when it comes to coming out of the bow. And then um you coming out of the bow. And then um you obviously have diameter of an arrow. You obviously have diameter of an arrow. You can do 6 mm diameter, 5 mil, 4 mil. I can do 6 mm diameter, 5 mil, 4 mil. I shoot 4 mil diameters and that depends shoot 4 mil diameters and that depends on I guess preference really. I like the on I guess preference really. I like the four ms because they usually are lighter four ms because they usually are lighter and me shooting 60 lb I like to go with and me shooting 60 lb I like to go with a lighter bow to get a lighter arrow to a lighter bow to get a lighter arrow to get the speed that I'm looking for. get the speed that I'm looking for. >> So, huh. >> So, huh. >> Yeah, a lot goes into the arrow. >> Yeah, a lot goes into the arrow. >> That's crazy. >> That's crazy. >> I never imagined this is this is turning >> I never imagined this is this is turning you really really fun. I have a fun you really really fun. I have a fun range story for you someday over coffee. range story for you someday over coffee. So that was when I was in the police So that was when I was in the police academy. I ended up shooting the academy. I ended up shooting the roofings at the range on 32nd Street roofings at the range on 32nd Street Naval Base down in San Diego once during Naval Base down in San Diego once during a rapid fire event. That was fun. But I a rapid fire event. That was fun. But I mean I by the way I did graduate and I mean I by the way I did graduate and I did serve as auxiliary security force did serve as auxiliary security force officer there. officer there. >> But yes, I did shoot the roof there. So >> But yes, I did shoot the roof there. So uh that was a little embarrassing. uh that was a little embarrassing. >> There you go. At least you at least you >> There you go. At least you at least you shot something. shot something. >> There you go. There you go. Right. I >> There you go. There you go. Right. I mean to find target. Really? mean to find target. Really? >> Yeah. The glasses half full. >> Yeah. The glasses half full. >> There you go. >> There you go. >> Um well, you've mentioned some serious >> Um well, you've mentioned some serious issues with regards to the string. issues with regards to the string. What's the worst archery accident you've What's the worst archery accident you've seen, if you don't mind? seen, if you don't mind? >> Oh man, the worst archery accident. I >> Oh man, the worst archery accident. I haven't seen much. Thank haven't seen much. Thank >> goodness. I've had to fix bows >> goodness. I've had to fix bows >> and I've had to help people who've had >> and I've had to help people who've had issues with bows out in the field. And issues with bows out in the field. And because I'm an archery tech, I've heard because I'm an archery tech, I've heard some stories, but I've never The worst some stories, but I've never The worst one that I've witnessed is my dumbass one that I've witnessed is my dumbass that blew up a bow and it ripped my skin that blew up a bow and it ripped my skin off of my bone off of my bone >> and I had to get rushed to the ER to get >> and I had to get rushed to the ER to get stitches on my finger. So, that's the stitches on my finger. So, that's the worst one that I've seen. worst one that I've seen. >> Yeah. But I've Oh, I've heard some >> Yeah. But I've Oh, I've heard some gnarly ones. For example, one of my gnarly ones. For example, one of my mentors, he was working on a bow, and mentors, he was working on a bow, and there's different types of bows. And so, there's different types of bows. And so, with different bows, you have to learn with different bows, you have to learn how to how to tune or fix each bow. tune or fix each bow. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> So, he he forgot, I guess, that step. >> So, he he forgot, I guess, that step. And so, he was adjusting the draw length And so, he was adjusting the draw length on a bow, a certain bow. And in order to on a bow, a certain bow. And in order to do it on this bow, you have to put it in do it on this bow, you have to put it in a bow press to take the pressure off the a bow press to take the pressure off the limbs. And he forgot to do that. So when limbs. And he forgot to do that. So when he did it, it actually snapped the cams, he did it, it actually snapped the cams, which is what the strings go on on the which is what the strings go on on the limbs. What turns the string. limbs. What turns the string. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> The cam snapped and got his finger >> The cam snapped and got his finger inside of the limb between the limb and inside of the limb between the limb and the cam and just completely crushed his the cam and just completely crushed his finger. finger. >> And it was stuck. And he there's nothing >> And it was stuck. And he there's nothing he could do because his finger stuck he could do because his finger stuck between an 80 lb limb and a cam. between an 80 lb limb and a cam. >> Oh my gosh. >> Oh my gosh. >> And it it tore his finger his thumb >> And it it tore his finger his thumb apart. It was a crazy story. It made me apart. It was a crazy story. It made me just want to throw up. just want to throw up. >> Yeah. That's that's terrible. That's >> But here here's kind of a sidebar question, here here's kind of a sidebar question, I guess, that talking about unsafe I guess, that talking about unsafe things. I I know your uncle used to do things. I I know your uncle used to do some unsafe things. some unsafe things. Oh god. Oh god. >> How much of what not to do did you learn >> How much of what not to do did you learn from him? from him? >> Everything. I just I'd look at him and >> Everything. I just I'd look at him and be like, "Okay, maybe I shouldn't do be like, "Okay, maybe I shouldn't do that." that." >> He He's something. He was something >> He He's something. He was something else. I'll tell you that much. else. I'll tell you that much. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Oh, boy. >> Oh, boy. >> Did he egg you on quite a bit? I kind of >> Did he egg you on quite a bit? I kind of have that feeling. Yeah. I love it. have that feeling. Yeah. I love it. >> Oh, yeah. Him and I. So, I don't know >> Oh, yeah. Him and I. So, I don't know how much my mom's told you about our how much my mom's told you about our relationship, but relationship, but >> not too much other than you guys were >> not too much other than you guys were close. He taught you how to ride, and I close. He taught you how to ride, and I think that's about the extent of it. think that's about the extent of it. >> Yeah. Him and I had a very special >> Yeah. Him and I had a very special relationship. I don't really have a good relationship. I don't really have a good relationship with any of my aunts or relationship with any of my aunts or uncles from both sides of my family, but uncles from both sides of my family, but the one relationship that I had was with the one relationship that I had was with my uncle. And it all started just from my uncle. And it all started just from him and I rzing each other and him and I rzing each other and >> yeah, >> yeah, >> just poking fun of each other, making >> just poking fun of each other, making fun of each other. He'd make fun of the fun of each other. He'd make fun of the fact that I was blonde. I'd make fun of fact that I was blonde. I'd make fun of the fact that he was called Harry, but the fact that he was called Harry, but he was bald. I mean, he was bald. I mean, >> I love it. Yeah, that's that that's a >> I love it. Yeah, that's that that's a truth right there. truth right there. >> It is. I mean, he's bald and his name's >> It is. I mean, he's bald and his name's Harry. What a I mean, that's Harry. What a I mean, that's contradicting. I Your whole life is contradicting. I Your whole life is contradicting right there. contradicting right there. But we had a very special relationship But we had a very special relationship all the way up until he passed and all the way up until he passed and >> I'll hold that close to my heart for >> I'll hold that close to my heart for sure. sure. >> Yeah, that's wonderful thing to hold. I >> Yeah, that's wonderful thing to hold. I think he's a fascinating person. Hal, I think he's a fascinating person. Hal, I think your entire family is fascinating. think your entire family is fascinating. So, I'm probably going to ask you a few So, I'm probably going to ask you a few more questions about him and your family more questions about him and your family if you don't mind while we're doing this if you don't mind while we're doing this lesson. lesson. >> Hey, I love to talk. So, we're and I >> Hey, I love to talk. So, we're and I love to talk about me and my family. So, love to talk about me and my family. So, let's do it. let's do it. >> I love it. Um, well, so all right, so I >> I love it. Um, well, so all right, so I ask one more quick question. All right, ask one more quick question. All right, so you two got into fun. What have you, so you two got into fun. What have you, doesn't have to be fun, but what did you doesn't have to be fun, but what did you learn from Harry? Kind of in a nutshell. Honestly, he he is the one that is the one that kind of showed me and taught me to just kind of showed me and taught me to just [ __ ] go for it. [ __ ] go for it. And those were his words. About two And those were his words. Can you explain that to me a >> Okay. Can you explain that to me a little bit? little bit? >> Yeah. So, there's different types of >> Yeah. So, there's different types of releases when it comes to compound bows. releases when it comes to compound bows. So, recurve bows, you use your fingers. So, recurve bows, you use your fingers. Compound bows, you're going to have a Compound bows, you're going to have a release. So, there's thumb triggers, release. So, there's thumb triggers, which is what I use. It's a handheld which is what I use. It's a handheld trigger. You put it around the dloop, trigger. You put it around the dloop, which is a loop on your string that which is a loop on your string that >> it's what pulls the bow back. Okay? >> it's what pulls the bow back. Okay? >> Obviously, your muscles pull it back, >> Obviously, your muscles pull it back, but that's the utensil you use to pull but that's the utensil you use to pull it back. So, you have a thumb trigger, it back. So, you have a thumb trigger, which your thumb is the one that which your thumb is the one that releases the arrow. releases the arrow. >> Then you have a finger trigger, which >> Then you have a finger trigger, which goes around your wrist, and you'll pull goes around your wrist, and you'll pull the bow back, and it's your pointer the bow back, and it's your pointer finger that releases the trigger. Then finger that releases the trigger. Then you get even more into it, and you have you get even more into it, and you have a back tension release or a hinge a back tension release or a hinge release. And that's all going to be release. And that's all going to be based off the hinge is kind of the based off the hinge is kind of the motion. It's not a trigger. It's just motion. It's not a trigger. It's just motion of your hand as to when you motion of your hand as to when you release that arrow. And a lot of people release that arrow. And a lot of people won't use a hinge release in a hunting won't use a hinge release in a hunting scenario. scenario. >> Okay? >> Okay? >> Because it's kind of like a it's an open >> Because it's kind of like a it's an open release. So, it's just a turn of your release. It's again not a trigger, but that It's again not a trigger, but that release is when you add more tension release is when you add more tension when you're in full draw. So with those when you're in full draw. So with those releases, why a lot of people like to releases, why a lot of people like to use them is with archery, you don't ever use them is with archery, you don't ever want to anticipate your shot. You always want to anticipate your shot. You always want your shot to be a surprise, and want your shot to be a surprise, and that's when you get the best shots. that's when you get the best shots. >> So the hinge and the back tension will >> So the hinge and the back tension will help with that surprise shot, but also help with that surprise shot, but also help with the follow through. help with the follow through. >> And that's the big thing is the follow >> And that's the big thing is the follow through of the shot. Well, you know what? At least you >> Okay. Well, you know what? At least you can say that. I'll take can say that. I'll take >> Yeah, it was funny cuz I again just went >> Yeah, it was funny cuz I again just went and grabbed the bike, got back on again and grabbed the bike, got back on again cuz cuz >> you don't quit. >> you don't quit. >> Hurrah. So in this regards about Harry >> Hurrah. Sure. >> Okay. Sure. >> But being who he was and growing up I >> But being who he was and growing up I didn't really realize didn't really realize who he was to me. He was just he was my who he was to me. He was just he was my uncle. He was Mount Baldi. He was Mr. uncle. He was Mount Baldi. He was Mr. King. Um King. Um >> and those were the nicknames I gave him. >> and those were the nicknames I gave him. And And >> yeah, I just to me he was just my uncle >> yeah, I just to me he was just my uncle and I looked up to him and not really and I looked up to him and not really knowing who he truly was. knowing who he truly was. >> And so at times it was hard to take him >> And so at times it was hard to take him serious. But serious. But >> you know, now looking back into the >> you know, now looking back into the things that he taught me and the life things that he taught me and the life lessons that lessons that >> I learned from him and with him not >> I learned from him and with him not being here anymore, I take those to being here anymore, I take those to heart and I hold them close to me cuz heart and I hold them close to me cuz they're pretty big life lessons that I they're pretty big life lessons that I use every day. use every day. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And in my world, not the BMX world, but >> And in my world, not the BMX world, but far as even being a mom, too. So, I far as even being a mom, too. So, I don't know if that answered your don't know if that answered your question. question. >> I think it does. It's actually Okay. It >> I think it does. It's actually Okay. It was that was a great response. was that was a great response. >> Thank you. >> Thank you. >> And any teacher wants their lessons to >> And any teacher wants their lessons to be taken with them in their passing, be taken with them in their passing, right? And so it's a wonderful thing. So right? And so it's a wonderful thing. So I guess the next step is this knocking. I guess the next step is this knocking. I've heard about knocking the arrow. I've heard about knocking the arrow. What is a knock? Can you kind of explain What is a knock? Can you kind of explain that to me real quick? that to me real quick? >> Yeah. So the knock is the little piece >> Yeah. So the knock is the little piece at the end of an arrow, the back side of at the end of an arrow, the back side of an arrow. That is the part that goes on an arrow. That is the part that goes on the string in between your dloop. So the the string in between your dloop. So the dloop is what you use to pull back the dloop is what you use to pull back the bow. bow. >> And the knock is what pinches >> And the knock is what pinches >> not pinches, but it's what puts the >> not pinches, but it's what puts the arrow on the string. arrow on the string. >> So um I'm going to I guess clip it in >> So um I'm going to I guess clip it in onto the string and then just kind of onto the string and then just kind of like this. How does that look? like this. How does that look? That looks great. Just like that. So, That looks great. Just like that. So, you want to hear that little click. you want to hear that little click. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> So, there's a little click. I don't know >> So, there's a little click. I don't know if you heard it, but when you knock an if you heard it, but when you knock an arrow, that's when someone's talking arrow, that's when someone's talking about knocking an arrow. You put the about knocking an arrow. You put the arrow on the string and you hear a click arrow on the string and you hear a click and you know that the arrow is knocked and you know that the arrow is knocked and ready to be fired. and ready to be fired. >> Okay. All right. Well, uh, does this >> Okay. All right. Well, uh, does this look about right then? look about right then? >> That looks perfect. Absolutely perfect. >> That looks perfect. Absolutely perfect. And there's there's different types of And there's there's different types of knocks, too. So you have knocks that knocks, too. So you have knocks that just like the one you have. It doesn't just like the one you have. It doesn't light up or anything. There's nothing light up or anything. There's nothing nothing special to it. But then you also nothing special to it. But then you also have knocks that after you shoot when it have knocks that after you shoot when it releases it lights up. So it's like a releases it lights up. So it's like a tracer, a bullet tracer. So you can see tracer, a bullet tracer. So you can see the arrow flight. It's like a big light. the arrow flight. It's like a big light. And in a hunting scenario, those are And in a hunting scenario, those are beneficial because you can see your shot beneficial because you can see your shot placement on a deer or an elk. They make placement on a deer or an elk. They make really cool videos, too. really cool videos, too. >> W >> W That would be cool. I love it. So I That would be cool. I love it. So I guess what's I just draw back, right? guess what's I just draw back, right? >> Yep. >> Yep. >> I with my left I push. With my right I >> I with my left I push. With my right I pull. pull. >> Yes. >> Yes. >> Perfect. And All right. Here we go. >> Perfect. And All right. Here we go. All right. How's everything look? Does All right. How's everything look? Does my hand look a little tight? It feels Am my hand look a little tight? It feels Am I holding it too tight? I feel like I'm I holding it too tight? I feel like I'm holding it too tight. holding it too tight. >> Yeah. So when you're in full draw like >> Yeah. So when you're in full draw like this, you feel the wall. So when I talk this, you feel the wall. So when I talk about that wall, it's like when you pull about that wall, it's like when you pull back, you feel the tension, you feel back, you feel the tension, you feel that poundage, and then all of a sudden that poundage, and then all of a sudden everything relaxes. everything relaxes. >> And so that is the let off of a bow. >> And so that is the let off of a bow. That way you can hold full draw as long That way you can hold full draw as long as you can. So you actually there's bows as you can. So you actually there's bows that have 80% let off up to 95% let off. that have 80% let off up to 95% let off. >> Um that way you're not holding 80 lbs of >> Um that way you're not holding 80 lbs of tension in full draw. So that's a tension in full draw. So that's a benefit of compound bows. Yeah. benefit of compound bows. Yeah. >> Okay, cool. minute. Uh, as far as I >> Okay, cool. minute. Uh, as far as I don't know how do I anchor this? Where don't know how do I anchor this? Where do I So, am I where how do I anchor do I So, am I where how do I anchor this? this? >> Okay. So, my mentor taught me you have a >> Okay. So, my mentor taught me you have a kisser nose peep. kisser nose peep. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> So, you have your kisser on the string >> So, you have your kisser on the string and that goes on the corner of your and that goes on the corner of your mouth. mouth. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> And then once you get the kisser on your >> And then once you get the kisser on your mouth, you put your nose on the string. mouth, you put your nose on the string. And don't be afraid to put your nose on And don't be afraid to put your nose on the string. the string. >> It's not going to hurt you. >> It's not going to hurt you. >> Yeah. So, >> Yeah. So, >> you want the string to line up on your >> you want the string to line up on your face. face. So have it be touching your face So have it be touching your face >> and then that way you can see straight >> and then that way you can see straight through the peep when you're shooting. through the peep when you're shooting. You want the same anchor point every You want the same anchor point every single time so your shots are exactly single time so your shots are exactly the same every single time because if the same every single time because if you have a different anchor point that you have a different anchor point that means every shot's going to be means every shot's going to be different. So that's why you have a different. So that's why you have a kisser. kisser. >> Put your nose on the string and you look >> Put your nose on the string and you look through the peep and it'll be the same through the peep and it'll be the same every time. every time. >> Okay. And this is getting a little >> Okay. And this is getting a little tight. If I want to kind of just put it tight. If I want to kind of just put it down for a second, like if I want to not down for a second, like if I want to not shoot the arrow, but give my arm a rest shoot the arrow, but give my arm a rest for a second. Is that possible or do I for a second. Is that possible or do I have to shoot? Shoot. have to shoot? Shoot. >> I would recommend shooting. >> I would recommend shooting. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Because letting in on a bow with heavy >> Because letting in on a bow with heavy poundage. poundage. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> If you're not I don't want to say >> If you're not I don't want to say skilled, but if you're not, what's the skilled, but if you're not, what's the word I'm looking for? word I'm looking for? >> Um, >> Um, >> experienced. >> experienced. >> Thank you. There you go. It's an e word. >> Thank you. There you go. It's an e word. Yeah. Yeah. If you're not experienced enough, you If you're not experienced enough, you letting in. You can risk what I said letting in. You can risk what I said earlier, knocking the string off the can earlier, knocking the string off the can >> if you don't let in cuz you need to let >> if you don't let in cuz you need to let in completely straight like you did when in completely straight like you did when you pulled back. you pulled back. >> And a lot of people can accidentally dry >> And a lot of people can accidentally dry fire that way as well. So, it's best fire that way as well. So, it's best just if you want to relax, just shoot just if you want to relax, just shoot it. it. >> Okay. All right. Well, I guess I need to >> Okay. All right. Well, I guess I need to learn how to aim it. So, any learn how to aim it. So, any recommendations there? Look through the recommendations there? Look through the peep. peep. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> And make sure your bow is completely >> And make sure your bow is completely level. So the level A lot of people level. So the level A lot of people don't focus on the the bubble on your don't focus on the the bubble on your site. site. >> Uhhuh. >> Uhhuh. >> But you got to make sure that bubble is >> But you got to make sure that bubble is level cuz if it's not level, you're level cuz if it's not level, you're going to be shooting left and right and going to be shooting left and right and your shots are going to be all over the your shots are going to be all over the place. So you want to make sure that place. So you want to make sure that bubble is level. bubble is level. >> Okay. Got it. And >> Okay. Got it. And >> and then get that pin exactly where you >> and then get that pin exactly where you want to hit. And like I said, don't want to hit. And like I said, don't anticipate the shot. Keep the tension on anticipate the shot. Keep the tension on the bow. So don't relax. So act like you the bow. So don't relax. So act like you are drawing back your bow and your are drawing back your bow and your muscles are still contracted. muscles are still contracted. >> And then when you have your finger on >> And then when you have your finger on the trigger, pull through it. Don't the trigger, pull through it. Don't press the trigger. You want to pull press the trigger. You want to pull through the trigger because all your through the trigger because all your back muscles are still contracted. back muscles are still contracted. >> Pull through the trigger. Okay. Pull >> Pull through the trigger. Okay. Pull through the trigger. Okay. through the trigger. Okay. >> Okay. I'm going to give this a shot. me >> Okay. I'm going to give this a shot. me kind of kind of >> and make sure your hand your left hand >> and make sure your hand your left hand that's holding the bow that's holding the bow >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> don't grip that bow cuz you can torque >> don't grip that bow cuz you can torque it. it. >> Oh, >> Oh, >> and that >> and that >> Yeah, I feel like it's a little It's >> Yeah, I feel like it's a little It's still It feels a little tight. So, all still It feels a little tight. So, all right. I'll get I guess I'll learn. right. I'll get I guess I'll learn. >> Yeah, this is a sketchy one for people >> Yeah, this is a sketchy one for people to learn. I'll actually tap your hand if to learn. I'll actually tap your hand if it's too tight. it's too tight. >> But essentially, you want the bow to >> But essentially, you want the bow to just be on your thumb bone, just be on your thumb bone, >> okay? and just relax every single >> okay? and just relax every single finger. You're not gripping that bow. I finger. You're not gripping that bow. I don't grip the bow at all at all. I My don't grip the bow at all at all. I My fingers are wide open when I'm holding fingers are wide open when I'm holding my bow in full draw. But make sure you my bow in full draw. But make sure you don't shoot your finger cuz that would don't shoot your finger cuz that would suck. suck. >> Oh boy. All right. Uh All right. Here we >> Oh boy. All right. Uh All right. Here we go. Here we go. All right. Let me take a go. Here we go. All right. Let me take a deep deep take a breath. It's not as scary as you take a breath. It's not as scary as you think. Hey, look at that. There it is. Right. >> Holy crap. That was fun. No, it was that >> Holy crap. That was fun. And >> Well, that was awesome. Thank you. And you were an amazing teacher. I do have I you were an amazing teacher. I do have I guess as I move forward with my archery guess as I move forward with my archery practice, practice, are there any tips that I should walk are there any tips that I should walk away with away with regarding practicing and getting better regarding practicing and getting better and enhancing my skills other than just and enhancing my skills other than just practicing and challenging myself? practicing and challenging myself? >> Yeah, when it comes to archery, it's >> Yeah, when it comes to archery, it's it's a very repetitive sport. So the it's a very repetitive sport. So the more you shoot, a lot of people will more you shoot, a lot of people will just grab a bow, shoot, and once a year just grab a bow, shoot, and once a year and that's it. Archery is something I and that's it. Archery is something I know you said other than practicing, but know you said other than practicing, but my motto is shoot straight or shoot a my motto is shoot straight or shoot a lot. I mean, lot. I mean, >> if you want to shoot straight, you're >> if you want to shoot straight, you're going to have to shoot a lot. going to have to shoot a lot. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And so you want to create that muscle >> And so you want to create that muscle memory when it comes to archery. And memory when it comes to archery. And just it's it's all about the reps you just it's it's all about the reps you put in and the time you put in. And the put in and the time you put in. And the more you shoot, the safer it becomes. So more you shoot, the safer it becomes. So your muscles will start to get muscle your muscles will start to get muscle memory. You'll start to get where your memory. You'll start to get where your anchor point is. And a big thing is anchor point is. And a big thing is knowledge of your bow. knowledge of your bow. >> Make sure you know the ins and outs of >> Make sure you know the ins and outs of your bow, your release, your arrows. And your bow, your release, your arrows. And if you have knowledge of your setup, if you have knowledge of your setup, there's less room for air or dry firing there's less room for air or dry firing or anything like that. And remember, do or anything like that. And remember, do not pull a bow back without an arrow. not pull a bow back without an arrow. >> I'm glad you told me that. That all >> I'm glad you told me that. That all makes total sense. That was awesome. I makes total sense. That was awesome. I just a couple more questions if you just a couple more questions if you don't mind, cuz I got a little game I don't mind, cuz I got a little game I like to play. So, one word for however you want to one word for however you want to describe your uncle as your uncle, describe your uncle as your uncle, right? Not Harry Liry, the BMX guy or right? It's really funny, but one word when you asked that did but one word when you asked that did come to mind. come to mind. >> Oh boy. Yeah. >> Oh boy. Yeah. >> And all I can think of is bald. >> And >> he's probably just looking down right >> he's probably just looking down right now just calling me a dumbass or a now just calling me a dumbass or a blonde or something. But I literally I blonde or something. But I literally I just just >> all I can think of is bald. And it's not >> all I can think of is bald. And it's not just cuz he's bald.
