Description snapshot

In this clip, Brandon Hetrick explains that Coleman Park is scheduled to get a paved pump track. The people of Lititz can go see a pump track in action, right down the road, and get time on the track.

Hear Brandon’s full-length conversation with Lititz BMX’s Kyle A. Huffman at https://youtu.be/6W4qgR5tTQw?si=Fl8RffWXZjd6u7OG
In this podcast episode, we dive into the exciting development of a pump track in Lititz, Pennsylvania, and what it means for the local community.

From early ideas and planning to community input and long-term vision, we discuss how this project came together and why pump tracks are becoming a valuable recreational asset for towns like Lititz.

The conversation explores how a pump track can support youth engagement, outdoor recreation, biking skills, and multi-use access for riders of all ages and abilities

Five Environmental Concerns When Building a Pump Track

1. Loss of Green Space or Habitat
Community groups often worry that a pump track may replace existing natural areas, open fields, or habitat used by wildlife. In Felton, for example, residents raised concerns about replacing a large portion of grassy park space with an asphalt track.

2. Impact on Historic or Sensitive Sites
Some proposals face pushback when the chosen location is historically significant or environmentally sensitive. The Valley Women’s Club highlighted concerns about placing a pump track in a historic covered‑bridge park area.

3. Stormwater Runoff and Drainage
Asphalt or modular surfaces can change how water flows through an area. Poorly planned drainage can lead to erosion, flooding, or damage to nearby ecosystems. While not stated directly in the results, this is a common concern tied to replacing permeable surfaces with impermeable ones.

4. Noise and Increased Human Activity
Community discussions often mention noise and increased foot or wheel traffic as environmental disturbances. The Felton proposal generated debate partly because of concerns about how the new activity would affect the surrounding park environment.

5. Heat and Material Footprint
Asphalt pump tracks absorb heat and can raise localized temperatures. They also require materials that have their own environmental footprint. While the search results focus more on community concerns than material science, the shift from natural ground to asphalt is part of the environmental debate.
