He still rode past the Lititz Pump Track on quiet mornings, long after the medals were boxed away. The place looked smaller now, tucked between the trees and the hum of town life, but to him it was the center of the universe. It was where everything started.

He was eight when he first rolled onto the asphalt, knees knocking, elbows stiff, trying to copy the older kids who floated over the rollers like they had wings. He didn’t have wings. He had a hand‑me‑down BMX, a stubborn streak, and a track that didn’t care who you were as long as you kept trying.
Day after day, he pumped through the corners, learning how to feel the ground instead of fight it. The track taught him rhythm, patience, and the strange magic of turning fear into flow. By the time he was a teenager, people in town knew his name. By twenty, the world did.

Four UCI Pump Track World Championships. Two Olympic gold medals. A career built on the same skills he learned right here: trust your line, stay loose, breathe, and keep going even when your legs burn.

He’d raced in cities he couldn’t pronounce, stood on podiums with flags rising behind him, heard crowds roar so loudly it felt like the air shook. But nothing ever matched the sound of his tires humming through that first berm in Lititz.

Now, retired and home again, he watched a little kid wobble onto the track—helmet too big, determination even bigger. The boy hesitated, then pushed off, rolling into the same rhythm he once discovered.

He smiled.
Maybe this story was fiction.
Maybe it wasn’t.
