Rudimental, the British electronic music collective consisting of Piers Aggett, Amir Amor, Kesi Dryden, and Leon Rolle, emerged from East London in the early 2010s with a sound that blended drum and bass, soul, garage, and electronic music. Known for creating songs rooted in real-life experiences and human resilience, the group consistently focused on authentic storytelling rather than traditional pop-star imagery. That commitment to genuine narratives would ultimately lead to one of the most significant BMX-related music videos ever produced.
In 2013, Rudimental released “Waiting All Night,” featuring vocals from Ella Eyre. Rather than centering the band itself, the music video told the true story of professional BMX rider and actor Kurt Yaeger. Following a devastating motorcycle accident that resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee, Yaeger faced a long and difficult recovery before eventually returning to riding. The video follows his rehabilitation, determination, and return to BMX, presenting an honest and deeply personal portrait of perseverance. To maintain authenticity, the production featured many of Yaeger’s real friends from the BMX community, including professional riders Danny Josa and Aaron Nardi, creating a genuine reflection of the support system that surrounded him.
The impact of “Waiting All Night” extended far beyond the music charts. The video introduced millions of viewers around the world to adaptive riding, BMX culture, and the challenges faced by injured athletes. Rather than using BMX as a backdrop or visual prop, Rudimental placed a rider’s story at the center of the project and allowed the culture to speak for itself. The video went on to win British Single of the Year at the 2014 Brit Awards and remains one of the most widely recognized examples of BMX culture being presented authentically to a mainstream audience. For many riders, it stands as a powerful reminder that resilience, community, and determination are every bit as important as the tricks themselves.
