Laura Smulders emerged from Nijmegen, Netherlands, to become one of the most accomplished athletes in the history of BMX racing. Born in 1993, she developed during a transformative period for the sport as BMX transitioned from its traditional racing roots into the modern Olympic Supercross era. Competing on increasingly technical tracks featuring larger starting hills, higher speeds, and more demanding race conditions, Smulders quickly established herself as one of the sport’s brightest young talents. Her breakthrough came at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, where she captured the bronze medal at just 18 years old. The achievement immediately placed her among the world’s elite riders and marked the beginning of a career that would help define an entire generation of women’s BMX racing.
Over the next decade, Smulders assembled one of the most impressive competitive records in the history of the sport. Renowned for her consistency, race management, and explosive starts, she became the winningest female rider in UCI BMX World Cup history, collecting 27 World Cup victories across multiple seasons. Her dominance extended beyond individual events, resulting in five overall UCI BMX World Cup Series titles in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2022. In 2018, she reached another career milestone by winning the UCI Elite Women’s World Championship in Baku, Azerbaijan, earning the coveted rainbow jersey as the world’s top rider. Throughout an era marked by increasing international depth and competition, Smulders remained a constant presence at the front of the field, establishing herself as one of the most successful and reliable competitors the sport has ever produced.
Beyond her victories, Smulders has played an important role in the continued growth of Dutch BMX and the broader international racing community. Alongside her sister, Olympic medalist Merel Smulders, she helped strengthen the Netherlands’ position as one of the world’s leading BMX nations. Her involvement with the Commencal BMX Project contributed to the development and refinement of modern racing equipment, while her service on the UCI Athletes‘ Commission allowed her to represent rider interests at the highest levels of the sport’s governance. Her re-election to the commission in 2025 reflected the respect she earned from competitors throughout the international BMX community.
