Located in the municipality of Waalre in North Brabant, the Waalre BMX Track area holds an important place in the earliest history of European BMX. Closely associated with Dutch BMX pioneer Gerrit Does, Waalre became one of the first locations where bicycle motocross was formally demonstrated and promoted in the Netherlands. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, the site helped introduce organized BMX riding to Dutch audiences at a time when the sport was still largely associated with the United States.
Waalre’s significance comes from its role in the foundation of Dutch and European BMX organization. In 1977, the municipality hosted one of the earliest official Dutch BMX demonstrations, helping spark wider interest in the sport. As BMX grew, Waalre became closely connected to the administrative side of the movement through Gerrit Does and the International Bicycle Motocross Federation, which was based in the Netherlands. The area also gained early media exposure through AVRO television coverage, helping introduce bicycle motocross to a broader national audience.
Although Waalre is best understood today as a historic BMX location rather than a major modern international race venue, its role in the sport’s development remains significant. The early demonstrations, television exposure, and organizational activity connected to Waalre helped establish the foundation for BMX racing in the Netherlands and across Europe. As later venues such as Slagharen and Papendal became internationally recognized, Waalre remained important as one of the places where the European BMX movement first began to take shape.
