Located on the grounds of Ponypark Slagharen, now known as Attractiepark Slagharen, the Slagharen BMX Track was one of the most important early BMX racing venues in Europe. Situated in Slagharen, Overijssel, the track became closely associated with the rapid growth of Dutch and international BMX during the early 1980s. Unlike a typical local club facility, Slagharen gained significance as a major event venue where European riders could compete against top international talent in front of large crowds and television audiences.
The track’s most important moment came in 1983, when Ponypark Slagharen hosted the IBMXF World Championships. The event marked the first time a BMX World Championship was held outside the United States and became a defining milestone in the international development of the sport. Under the leadership of Dutch BMX pioneer Gerrit Does, Slagharen helped demonstrate that BMX had grown beyond its American origins and could support major international competition in Europe. In the years that followed, the venue continued to host high-profile European Challenge Cup events, making it one of the most recognized BMX racing locations of the old-school era.
Although the original BMX Stadion Slagharen track was closed and removed in 1994, its historical importance remains firmly established within European BMX history. The venue helped introduce international BMX racing to a wider European audience, supported the growth of Dutch riders and teams, and provided a stage for some of the most important races of the 1980s and early 1990s. Today, Slagharen is remembered not as an active BMX facility, but as one of the landmark venues that helped transform BMX into a truly international sport.
