Founded in Edmonton, Alberta in 1998 by Bernie Tomaszewski and Steve Roy, 1664 BMX became one of Canada’s most recognizable rider-owned BMX companies during the late 1990s and early 2000s. After Tomaszewski assumed sole ownership in 1999, the company expanded from distribution into Canadian-based BMX manufacturing focused on durable street-oriented components designed for aggressive riding and harsh riding conditions.
1664 gained recognition for producing BMX handlebars, hubs, pedals, sprockets, and other aftermarket parts manufactured in-house in Canada. Products such as the Windsor, Maple, and Widowmaker handlebars became closely associated with the company’s rugged, street-focused identity during the mid-school BMX era.
In addition to manufacturing, 1664 expanded its influence through BMX distribution and event promotion. The company secured Canadian distribution rights for major international BMX brands including Profile Racing and S&M while also organizing the Street Justice contest series between 2000 and 2007, which became one of Canada’s most recognized BMX street competitions.
Today, 1664 BMX remains remembered as an important independent Canadian BMX company that combined local manufacturing, rider-driven design, distribution, and event support during a major growth period for Canadian freestyle BMX culture.
1664 organized the Street Justice contest series from 2000 to 2007, one of Canada’s best-known BMX street events.
The company became known for Canadian-manufactured BMX components designed for street riding.
