Founded by Bert Lewis in 1964 as Northern Cycle Industries in British Columbia, Norco Bicycles became one of Canada’s most influential cycling companies. Originally operating from a converted chicken coop, the company later adopted the shortened “Norco” name and expanded into a major international bicycle manufacturer headquartered in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia.
During the 1970s, Norco helped introduce specialized BMX bicycles to the Canadian market with models such as the Spitfire and Starfire, contributing to the early growth of BMX racing across the country. Throughout the 1980s, the company supported factory BMX racing teams and played an important role in the expansion of organized Canadian BMX competition.
Norco later expanded into mountain biking, releasing the “Bigfoot” in 1983, widely recognized as one of Canada’s earliest production mountain bikes. During the 1990s and 2000s, the brand became closely associated with freeride mountain biking and appeared prominently in the influential Kranked video series.
Today, Norco remains a family-owned company and one of Canada’s most recognizable cycling brands. While widely known for mountain biking and modern bicycle engineering, the company’s legacy remains strongly connected to the early development of BMX and off-road cycling culture in Canada.
The company released the “Bigfoot” mountain bike in 1983, one of Canada’s earliest production mountain bikes.
Norco became internationally recognized through its involvement in freeride mountain biking and the Kranked film series.
