Lititz BMX Book Club Series - Day One: Remembering why you came here in the first place

Chapter 7: Day One
Ok Lititz BMX Book Club Members, it has been a while. Life has been wonderfully hectic but I had to get back to day one and just take time to read a good BMX story, and more. This chapter was so perfectly timed to return to the book, that it was titled “Day One.” Did Mike Miller instinctually know that I would take a break at some point when he wrote it?
So… Why Day One - Again?
In this chapter, we learn about Mike’s ebb and flow with the sport of BMX. His good friends Mike Miranda and Tommy Brackens went on to become Hall of Fame members. But more than that, Mike Miller always wondered what Mike Miranda had that others don’t - he pined (maybe strong word) over this.
Fast forward…
We get to read about Mike Miller’s journey back to BMX announcing because of his son’s involvement with BMX - essentially, he was recognized - one thing leads to another - he is announcing again. The track changed ownership a couple of times and Mike eventually found himself away from BMX again.
Then he saw it… A Stretched beach cruiser a friend had. Through bicycle fellowship, Mike learned a new BMX track and he offered to announce at the track until the owner found someone to replace him. Well, Mike came to learn that he was now working within a family circle that he knew and respected. I am not sure if he is still announcing but in the book it mentions that he was still doing so as of 2022. He loves it and he gets to see kids’ Day One.
The chapter continues on about relevant points regarding equal pay and justification of pay for play while pointing out that many disparately impacted groups tend to remember their reason for being there better, and more passionately, than someone who has arrived. His arguments have validity but that isn’t the point here and he does point out and showcase a story about a legend who hasn’t forgotten his Day One and smiles as a role model when he shares not only about the sport that made him a legend, but wearing the uniform of a Police Officer in the community - Stu Thomsen.
