Brand Profile: Torker BMX
Original Brand Ownership/Run: 1976 - 1984

John Johnson started a company called Texon (1975), that became Johnson Engineering (1976), then Torker (1976). One of John’s sons, Doug, raced BMX at the time and wanted a better bike so John created the first prototype, and Steve Johnson (son) played a key role in engineering. Doris (Mom) and Doug ran MAX, the sister company - started in 1980.
“Torker quickly gained traction in the BMX world, especially after building the first Haro Freestyler frames for Bob Haro, a pivotal figure in freestyle BMX. Their bikes were known for innovative geometry and construction, including models like the Torker MX, L.P., and TorkFlyte, which became staples in the late '70s and early '80s.” - Copilot
During their heyday, Torker BMX riders racked up some wins in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Kevin McNeal, a standout who became a California State Champion, won the NBA/Mongoose Grandnationals while riding the original Torker MX. At the time, those two events were among the most competitive in the United States.
While Torker as a brand didn’t always dominate the podiums like some of the bigger factory teams, they were known for nurturing elite talent. Riders like Eddy King, Mike Miranda, and Clint Miller all had major national wins during their careers, many of which were while riding for Torker or shortly after. Their presence helped cement Torker’s reputation as a serious contender in the BMX scene.
Declared bankruptcy in 1984
- The Torker BMX name was purchased by Seattle Bike Supply
- In 1986, the Torker name was bought by Tioga - Torker 2 Freestyle brand was introduced
- In 2015, Supercross began the process of purchasing the Torker brand, from Accell NA, and relaunched in 2024 - headquartered in Apple Valley, CA.
Over the years, the Torker name has been used on non-BMX bikes, such as: beach cruisers, three-wheelers, tandem bikes, and unicycles too.
Sponsored Riders (Sampling):
