Asphalt has to stay hot and workable long enough to be compacted. Cold air and a cold ground steal that heat too fast, which ruins the pavement before it ever has a chance to set properly.

❄️ Why cold weather is a problem
- Asphalt cools extremely quickly in cold air. As soon as it leaves the truck, it starts losing heat, and cold weather speeds that up dramatically.
- If the base (ground) is cold, it pulls heat out even faster. A cold base can make the asphalt stiffen before crews can compact it, which leads to weak pavement.
- Without proper compaction, asphalt won’t be strong or durable. Compaction is what gives asphalt its density and long‑term stability, and cold conditions make proper compaction difficult or impossible.

🌡 Typical temperature guidelines
- Many paving experts say asphalt work becomes unreliable when temperatures are below about 50°F.
- If the ground is below freezing, it’s generally considered too cold to lay asphalt at all.

🛠 What happens if you try anyway?
- The asphalt may not bond well.
- It can develop weak spots or early cracking.
- The surface may ravel, crumble, or fail prematurely.
Basically, cold weather shortens the working time so much that the asphalt can’t be shaped and compacted before it hardens.
