I’ve been sweeping this pump track for thirty-seven years.

That’s longer than most of the bikes that have rolled over it, longer than the shoes, helmets, and fashions that came and went like seasons. I’ve seen neon spandex turn into baggy denim, which turned into skinny jeans, which somehow turned back into baggy again. I’ve watched plastic wheels grow softer, frames grow lighter, bars grow wider, and kids grow into parents who bring their own kids back to the same starting berm.

Through all of it, the track has stayed honest.

The lines don’t care what you wear or what you ride. They reward the same things they always have: patience, timing, and respect. You can’t bully a pump track. You have to listen to it. I learned that early, fixing cracks and smoothing seams, watching riders who fought the track stall out while the quiet ones flew.

I’ve had this job so long I can tell where a leaf will settle after a windy night. I know which roller holds morning frost the longest and which berm sings when a rider hits it just right. I’ve stood here before dawn and after dusk, broom in hand, listening to tires hum like a language only the track and I understand.

Tomorrow, I hang up the broom.

I don’t worry about the concrete. It’ll outlast me. What I hope—what I really hope—is that whoever takes my place slows down enough to see it. To notice how the curves invite you forward, how the track teaches without speaking. To understand that maintenance isn’t just patching and cleaning. 

It’s stewardship.

This place isn’t frozen in time. People change. Styles change. But the lines? 

The lines are a promise.

I hope my replacement stands here one quiet morning, like I have a thousand times, and feels grateful to be part of something that flows on, even after we step aside.
