Chapter 9: It is all about the kids.

I am not going to lie. I struggled with this chapter. Why? Not because of how Mike wrote about his experiences - but because I couldn’t stop my mind from wandering into a 1000 questions that I have. I can’t blame him for my inability to focus. But… We will come back to this.

The chapter started off heart-warming to me. I could see “Little Johnny” and his sister. I could imagine Mike sharing the story from the announcer’s booth about how Little Johnny’s sister got his hand-me-down, while showing her “what to do when her race comes up.” Day One.

     I can almost hear Mike say over the PA system “Man, Johnny is rippin it up on his new bike, and showing his little sister what to do when her race comes up.”

When you think of your Day One and doing what you love, do you share these sentiments in Mike’s statement here, “I can come up with 100 reasons to NOT go to the track today to announce this race. The truth is this. NONE of them compare to DAY ONE.”?

Now, coming back to my struggles with this chapter… Mike made a comment to me a while ago that has me searching for answers throughout the book that I haven’t yet found. In this chapter, I thought that I may have started to stumble upon some of those answers. I am not sure and now I have more questions than answers. Being a “Severe” Bi-Polar 1 person, it can be hard for me to concentrate and focus on things - my head spins 1000 mph most of the time; in this project I am able to find many moments of peace and focus. For this peace, I am grateful to Mike and all of you taking the time to read my ramblings - thanks to all of you. Enough about this…

To bring us up to my mind-wandering provocation, we read about a fall-out between volunteers and the track operators at Mike’s local track. It wasn’t between him and anyone, but it didn’t have to be, he felt the sting of the loss of those volunteers' attendance at the track. He doesn’t point out the bickering adults as a source of bothersome thoughts… Mike points out the children caught in the middle.

I feel like this is all too common of an issue in sports.

I don’t know the details of the story from there and I am not asking Mike to share them but it does lead to questions that I hope to someday be able to ask him outside of a public setting like this.
