Chapter 10: What’s in a name?

“That is the value of doing something you love to do, and doing it from your heart, and not your wallet.” - That line really sticks out to me.

Is there anything in your life that this line rings true for?

I will share more of mine later… I have been thinking about it a lot as this book is coming to an end. How this book has affected me, changed my way of life really - and way of thinking - at the right time and mindset - God does some curious things for sure. Faith, Hope, and my family keep me going with some dear friends I have picked up along the way. It’s been a rough decade for us but we are collectively seeing the results of seven years of sobriety from alcohol and what I hope is one hell of a comeback story! Many people have asked… Why haven’t you monetized your podcast? Here is your answer (not saying it won’t be someday, but I draw a modest pension and live within my means):

Mike starts this chapter off with a story about getting moto sheets, connecting with those racers, and even creating life-long memories through nicknames - we get briefly introduced to “the Pretzel”, “Lefty”, “Fluffy”, and a boy named “Hot Pants Helper”. Mike recalls a name he once had sewn across the tail of his race pants, “I LIKE IT” then explained that after a year of it, he decided he didn’t like it anymore - Mikey had to get new pants.
     Why does Mikey like it (nicknames)? 
     “Every single time you hear that you will know that the person calling you that name knows you personally and has a connection with you. Sounds like a small thing, but trust me, it is not.”

One thing I didn’t catch until the 2nd run through of this chapter was Mike’s recognition of his mission that truly established his purpose. This hits hard because I have been talking with Byron Tgi Friday about Rick Warren’s “Life of Purpose” TED Talk - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=640BQNxB5mc - How so? Hear Mike’s words as you read them:

“I suppose that my mission is clear. I do everything within my power to make every BMX racer’s experience a good one. If my words on a microphone can enhance just one kid’s experience, then my mission is accomplished” (Influence), and remember - Mike doesn’t accept financial compensation for announcing because he doesn’t have to (Affluence). You’ll understand if you watch the TED Talk.

The chapter goes on to share more stories. Through these stories, Mike knows that God has blessed him with this aspect of his life and lessons but recognized that he was not always able to see all of the lessons in front of him at the time - who does? He knows that in his heart “being the announcer pays me 100 times the value of my time invested”...”That is the value of doing something you love to do, and doing it from your heart, and not your wallet.”...”I see it as a privilege.”
