Lititz BMX Book Club Series - Day One: Remembering why you came here in the first place

“Right book at the right time, with the right mindset” - Kyle A. Huffman

I am cross posting over to Instagram and have had the pleasure of rereading these chapter reviews while transferring them. One thing keeps resonating with me about this book… 

   I want more
   More guidance
   More insight
   More real-life suggestions and recommendations
   Just more… It almost became like the guidance of a good friend.

I am not a “pleasure reader” by any stretch. This may now be the 2nd book since my first deployment in 2000 that I read cover to cover - “Where is Joe Merchant” - Jimmy Buffett.

That’s beside the point. But is it? This is my final review of this book. If you have learned anything by reading my previous reviews, you will understand that I personalized Mike’s lessons/stories as much as possible because I have learned to believe in them - his way of thinking makes sense.

So… There is no more of a finer final review for a lesson than to understand how the lesson has been applied.

Here is my Day One and how this book helped to keep me anchored through the chaos of the past year+. 

I started the whole journey of Lititz BMX as a way to help pay for my daughter to attend a private school here in Lititz (Linden Hall) and decided that I was going to rent my collection of vintage BMX bikes to rock stars visiting Lititz. I had been collecting and restoring for about 8 years at that point. That sounds nuts!!! “You are in a town with a population of less than 10,000ish.” Well, a fatal flaw in your assumption misses the fact that we get all of the major touring acts during the stage prep for their worldwide tours, through a campus called Rock Lititz. Remember, I do draw a modest pension, so I am not at the mercy of being pressed to make immediate financial recoupment. I also have the experience and resources to make this work.

I knew it! No… I know it.

I had been sitting in the self-pity of my fallen professional and personal (minus the birth of my daughter) life through addiction and mental health issues that I was learning how to address. 

“I am going to rent my bikes to Rock Stars” I said - as they do with severely Bi–Polar people, like me, the wheels were turning… I thought, let’s enhance the rental experience with a unique museum (mobile was my original thought) to deliver the bikes. I started to collect fun BMX things in hopes of one day starting this museum. 
Then… I stumbled upon “Bob”.

Bob brought me “The Leary Collection”, which in and of itself is the story behind movies it feels like. Someone of my caliber shouldn’t have these things, I thought. But, what did I do with it? I recognized that the value is not in the flip. The value is in the stories and the connections, and rights that could possibly be wronged, through access to such an amazing gift. Don’t think for a second that I am not grateful. 

Someday, after the possible statute of limitations expires (I sort of kid - I don’t think I actually did anything immoral or illegal towards Bob) I will share more publicly. The situation got thick between the two of us after he “swindled me.” I kind of lost it on him. Bob was the guy selling stuff from Harry Leary’s locker that he purchased when Harry failed to make payments. When I look back though, there was way more good that came from that whole fiasco that I ever dreamed of at the time - #1 the return of Harry’s bike to his family.

But the thrill and excitement of sharing and doing what I had to do to build everything took me in many potential paths. While I squirrled a bit while reading the book, I was actually able to use the Day One concept to ground myself many times. I am grateful for that too!

Many people think that Lititz BMX has a goal of something within BMX itself but remember my Day One was to build a rock and roll company, not a BMX company. BMX is the hook - which is why I can see through much of the “hate” I get within the community - it isn’t relevant to my business model, although for a time I allowed the hate to float in my head like it was. I am building something bigger than just some of my vintage bikes for resale.
