In this clip from the Pump Track Chat podcast, Brandon Hetrick explains that all wheels are welcome. Hear Brandon’s full-length conversation with Lititz BMX’s Kyle A. Huffman at https://youtu.be/6W4qgR5tTQw?si=Fl8RffWXZjd6u7OG The UCI Pump Track World Championship is fast, loud, and surprisingly intense — much closer to head‑to‑head sprint racing than the mellow, playful vibe most people associate with pump tracks. 🌍 A global championship series The event is part of the Velosolutions UCI Pump Track World Championships, a worldwide series of qualifiers that lead to a single World Final each year. Riders from dozens of countries — BMX racers, mountain bikers, and pump‑track specialists — compete for a shot at the rainbow jersey. 🏁 The racing format Riders race one at a time, trying to set the fastest possible lap on a compact, highly technical track. Times are often separated by hundredths of a second, which makes every pump and every line choice matter. The track is usually around 180–200 meters long, with tight berms and fast rollers that demand perfect rhythm. The 2024 championship track in Durban, South Africa, was 191 meters and described as “technical and demanding”. 🎉 The atmosphere The finals bring together elite BMX racers, MTB pros, and local heroes all on equal footing — pump tracks level the playing field in a unique way. Crowds tend to be loud and close to the action, since the tracks are compact and the racing is rapid‑fire. Host cities often highlight local culture; for example, the 2024 event took place in Durban’s vibrant KwaMashu district, known for its strong community energy. 🏆 The stakes Winners earn the UCI rainbow jersey, the same iconic symbol awarded in other cycling world championships. In 2024, Ryan Gilchrist and Sabina Košárková took the titles. 🚴 Who competes? Although the event is part of the Mountain Bike World Championships, many riders use 20‑inch BMX bikes, which tend to dominate because of their acceleration and agility. 📚 About Lititz BMX Lititz BMX is an independent BMX preservation project dedicated to documenting and preserving the people, bikes, artifacts, race history, and stories that shaped the sport.
