The story centers on Cru Jones (played by Bill Allen), a talented teenage BMX racer living in a small town with his mother and younger sister.
Cru faces a major life crossroads: he must choose between taking his SATs to secure a college future or qualifying for Helltrack, a grueling BMX race offering a $100,000 grand prize and a new Chevrolet Corvette.
Despite his mother’s disapproval, Cru chooses to chase his dream. Along the way, he falls in love with Christian Hollings (Lori Loughlin), an amateur racer who supports his journey. Cru’s path is complicated by Duke Best, the corrupt president of the Federation of American Bicyclists, who repeatedly changes the race rules to ensure his sponsored star, Bart Taylor (played by Olympic gymnast Bart Conner), wins the event.
When a last-minute rule change regarding participant sponsorship threatens to disqualify him, Cru’s younger sister Wesley creates a shirt for him that reads “Cru is RAD”. Inspired, Cru uses his qualifying prize money to found his own small business, Rad Racing. With the eventual financial and moral support of his townspeople, Cru overcomes the obstacles and dirty tactics of his rivals to compete in and ultimately win Helltrack.
